Undarlega Írland (english below)

Eins og einhverjir hafa kannski tekið eftir þá finnst mér Írland og írar oft hið undarlegasta fólk og ég er ekki alltaf beint sáttur við hvernig hlutirnir eru hér. Ég hélt að eftir rúmt ár á Írlandi væri ég farinn að verða öllu vanur í fari íra, drykkjumenningu, kæruleysi og undarlegheitum í bland við gestrisni. En núna gengu þeir algerlega fram af mér.

Fólk hér gerir frekar mikið af því að keyra undir áhrifum og það þykir ekki mikið tiltökumál að fá sér eins og 2-3 bjóra og keyra heim og þá sérstaklega þegar þú átt heima í sveitinni þar sem ekki er mikið af leigubílum eðs strætisvögnum. Lögreglan hér hefur lengi verið að reyna að berjast við þetta og datt fyrir stuttu niður á sérdeilis sniðuga lausn. Stöðva bíla af handahófi og láta fólk blása í blöðru. Ekki það að þessi tækni hafi ekki verið til staðar, þessu var næstum einungis beitt ef fólk lenti í árekstri og lögreglan kom á staðinn eða ef lögreglan varð vitni af því að þú varst í stórsvigi á veginum. En, núna er þetta sem sagt orðið vopn á barráttunni við stúta undir stýri. Gott og vel. Átakið hefur haft áhrif, færri fara á pöbbinn og keyra heim sem aftur þýðir að pöbbarnir græða minna en vegirnir eru ögn öruggari (það deyja samt um 40 manns á ári hér í Galway sýslu sem telur að ég held um 150 þús manns).
Það sem mér þykir undarlegast er að samtök bareigenda eru frekar móðguð yfir þessu og hafa gengið svo langt að fara fram á að ríkisstjórnin endurgreiði bareigendum í sveitum það tekjutap sem þeir hafa orðið fyrir eftir að þessi nýja stefna var tekin upp. Já, bareigendur eru móðgaðir yfir því að ríkisstrjórnin skuli dirfast að gera vegina hættuminni með því að taka stútana úr umferð og vilja bætur.


Strange Ireland
As some people might have noticed I sometimes find Ireland a strange place and the Irish a strange bunch of people and I am not always very content here in Ireland. Non the less, I have gotten used to the Irish in the year I have been here and am now used to their little peculiarities, from their drinking habits and carelessness to their hospitality and laid back attitude. But now, some of the good people of this Island have outdone themselves.

The drinking culture here is such that it is not considered that big of a deal to have a pint or three and then drive home, specially if you live in the country where the taxis are scarce and buses hard to come by. The Gardai (Irish police) have long been trying to fight this and have now come up with a good way, random breath tests. It is not like this technique has not been available for the Gardai, it has mostly been used if a car is in a crash or if the driver almost swings in front of a Gardai car so there really is no other possibility than the driver being drunk.
But, this is now random breath tests are now a weapon against those that drink and drive and that is to be saluted. It seems to be working too, people are drinking less but the roads are a bit less dangerous before (even though in Galway county with a population of around 150.000 I think there are about 40 deaths on the roads a year).
The strangest thing in my view is that the Vintners (the association of bar owners I think it is) are rather offended about this and have demanded that the government refund them the financial loss that they have suffered since the random testing was commenced. Yes, they want to be compensated for the fact that the roads are a bit safer.
I don't think this would happen anywhere else than in Ireland!

Jólin koma og Jón með/Yuletide is coming and Jón with them

Þá fer að líða að jólum og ég er ekki frá því að jólaskapið sé að koma. Um helgina skrifaði ég jólakortin með jólakrúsina sem amma Dista málaði handa mér stútfulla af kakói og hlustaði á jólaplötur áranna 2003-2005 með gæðagleðibandinu Hraun. Ein sería komin upp hér, mínímalískur aðventukrans, smartís jóladagatal með berbrjósta Maríu mey og sitthvað í þeim dúr.

Það eru líka smá breytingar á ferðatilhögun minni. Kem heim á föstudaginn 15. des og verð til 5. jan. Fannst óþarfi að eyða helginni hér í Galway í lítið annað en að bíða eftir því að fara. Gæti líka verið að ég geri eitthvað skemmtilegt um helgina heima ;)

Yuletide is coming and I just think that the yuletidespirit is upon me. This weekend I wrote the cards with the season mug that my granny Dista painted for me full to the brim with hot coco and listened to the christmas albums from 03-05 with the most amazing band Hraun. At the house we have the festive decorations up, some lights, minimalistic advent decoration, smarties chocolate calendar with a bear breasted Virgin Mary and stuff like that.

Small changes with my itinerary, am going home next Friday instead of Sunday but will stay until the 5th as planned. Found no reason for staying in Galway when I could have fun in Iceland. Who knows, maybe I'll find something to do there ;)

The countries I have visited/Löndin sem ég hef heimsótt

These are the countries that I have visited in one form or another. Must say that Luxembourg should not really be there, we only landed at the airport, boarded a bus and drove to Germany. But, I'll leave it in there as I am going there next year anyway :p

Þetta eru löndin sem ég hef heimsótt. Verð reyndar að viðurkenna að Lúxemborg á nú eiginlega ekki heima þarna. Við lentum bara þarna, hoppuðum upp í rútu og keyrðum áleiðis til Þýskalands. En ég hef það inni þar sem ég er nú á leiðinni þangað á næsta ári :p
